How to Make Money From Blogging (and Why I’m Not Doing It)

Hey guys! So, when the idea of leaving the 9-5 and an actual steady job became more and more real, my focus had to shift next to, “okay, if I don’t have an actual job I will not have an actual paycheck…where is my money going to come from?”

What I decided on was to make money with blogging and social media. I had no idea how to get started, I just knew that it could be done. And I figured, since I want to blog anyway, this kinda seemed perfect!

If you are not aware, blogging and using your social media can be an amazing way to earn income… part time or full time! Basically how it works is that brands will pay you in product and/ or cash to give them publicity on your social media channels.

The pay rate is determined by quite a few variables and there really isn’t a “set” price. You simply negotiate with the brand on what they want (blog post, IG Story, tweets, etc) and together you come up with a package and a price that both sides are happy with.

Now, before I go any further I want to say I think this is an amazing way to earn income. Yes, it’s work, and just like anything else, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. But overall, I really do feel it’s such a cool option for some and it’s neat that it’s even a thing!

I have been lucky enough to have been able to do posts for product or cash and some for both. I’ve made a good bit of extra money from this and that’s why you might be surprised when I say I am not going to continue.

And here’s why…

So in working with brands you definitely have to have your numbers up. The number of your followers, the number of your engagement rate, number of site visitors, etc. all need to be moving up. Now, some brands will still work with you even when you are smaller but obviously, the more followers/ fans you have, the larger your reach is, and the more brands will pay. Some brands even have set benchmarks such as “must have at least 10k+ followers on IG” or whatever.

I get it. Brands want to know their money will be well spent. Many brands now are even shifting their focus from number of followers to engagement rate. How many comments and likes you get on and Instagram picture is starting to matter more.

Because of this numbers game, there are many “tricks” you can do to make sure yours increase. You can follow people and “like” their photos so that in return they may follow you or like some of your photos.

Ive also been seeing invites to “pods”. I don’t even really know what these things are other than groups where you have to “like” let’s say, the first ten pictures, and then you drop your picture so everyone can hit “like”.

To me, this just seems kinda weird. Like I don’t want people liking a picture of mine because it was next to like in the “pod”. I would rather have ten “real” likes than 200 fake ones, ya know? But if you are trying to make money from blogging, the 200 fake likes are better…gets that engagement rate up.

And it’s the same with followers. I would rather have 100 true followers that I engage with and we really get along rather than 10k followers of random accounts. I don’t want someone to follow me because of a “trick”. I want someone to follow me because they enjoy my account and journey.

To me, this is not how I want to spend my days. I don’t want to always be on social media trying to like, follow and comment on accounts so they do the same for me to increase my numbers. I don’t want to stress over getting the perfect “Instagram worthy ” picture and caption. I don’t want to research hashtags to make sure I’m using the most effective ones to reach people.

I don’t want to have to try to win “most popular” in a virtual social media reality… heck, I don’t even care if I’m most popular in this reality. I just want to be. I just wanna live my life, travel around and make some cool crafty things in the process.

So I am going back to my original plan of focusing on creating and selling my wall hangings and any other crafty things I end up trying. I feel like this is what is true to my soul. This is what brings me joy and this is when I feel most content. And, since this is my life I am able to choose what I wanna do and craft my life around it.

So, I will still be on FB, IG, Twitter, and Snap…I just won’t be stressing trying to get the perfect lighting, angle, caption, quote or comment…I will no longer be looking at the real world through “Instagram eyes” always on the lookout for that perfect shot…I won’t be liking photos or accounts just so they follow back…I won’t care how many followers I have (or don’t have)…I’ll just be me, doing my thing, and you can join along if you’d like. 😀
