Deep Breathing; Why and How

Hey friends! Good morning and happy day! Wanted to share with you a few things I learned about breathing; more specifically, deep breathing and why and how we should do it.

Now I know from doing yoga and such in the past what a good, slow, deep breath is supposed to feel like. And when being led by the instructor, I’ve got it! The problem is I never do that unless I am being instructed to do so in a class.

(Also…am I the only one that when the instructor is telling you to focus on your breath, you start kinda over thinking it and get stressed? Like I feel my exhales are never as long as theirs and then I get all off rhythm with the class and have to take like a “cheat breath” to get back in unison…which makes me just start focusing on how off I am which leads me to get more off….is it just me?)

I digress…

With so many benefits of deep breathing, I am making a conscious effort to be more aware of my breathing pattern and making time to specifically focus on my breath for a bit each day.

So why am I even trying to think about it? Because there are so many benefits of deep breathing!

A few of the benefits include:

  • Releases muscle tension
  • Helps to relax the mind which enhances the ability to learn and focus
  • Oxygen levels increase throughout your body
  • Blood pressure lowers
  • Detoxification improves
  • Endorphins are released
  • Relieves stress and anxiety

To really enjoy those benefits, deep “correct” breathing needs to be done.

So what is the “right way”?

The “right way” to breathe means to breathe in through the nose, with the diaphragm, and exhale through the mouth, relaxed and rhythmically. Inhale 2-3 seconds, exhale 3-4 seconds, pause and repeat.

One way to check how you are breathing is to put one hand on your chest and another on your belly. When breathing in, the hand on your belly should move out further that the one in your chest.

Another way to see how you are doing is grab your waist and move your hands right below your rib cage. As you inhale, feel your lungs expand.

As I said earlier, I am getting better at the breathing bit, I just need to make sure I do it more regularly throughout the day.

I actually found a pretty cool trick to help remind myself.

You simply make “if/then” statements and spread them out throughout your day.

So for example some could be:

If I am cooking food ->then I will check my breathing.

If my alarm goes off -> then I will check my breathing.

If I close my car door -> then I will check my breathing.

If I am washing dishes-> then I will check my breathing.

I’m going to be making my “if/then” statements today and start trying them out! I really like this idea because while you may have to think about it at first, I imagine it would just become habit eventually.
