One of my favorite songs is “Let’s Live for Today” by The Grass Roots (yes, it’s from 1960’s and no, I was not alive then 😀).
It came on Pandora a couple of days ago and while listening to it I had sort of an epiphany.
Whenever I have heard that phrase before, “Live for today”, I took it in kinda a selfish way- that it was all about me living for the day, me being in the present moment, me working on my goals and crushing the day like there’s no tomorrow.
I was always looking at it from a “me first” kinda place.
It seemed like kind of a slogan to throw out when you want to do something crazy.
“Hey mom, I wanna sell all my stuff and just live a life of working on my art and traveling with Zero…you know, because..live for today”.
And then it hit me; my epiphany.
There are two sides to this whole ‘live for today’ thing!
While I do believe it’s about looking inward and being in the present moment and doing things in life you enjoy, I also believe you need to look outward with it as well.
It’s not just about how you are living for the day, it’s about what you can do to make someone else’s day worth living.
It’s about living for today as if this one day is how you would be remembered (and handling the day’s situations with that in mind).
It’s about smiling and saying hello to a stranger. It’s about making connections and making others feel loved.
It’s about doing random acts of kindness and being helpful. It’s about showing love and starting a chain reaction of it.
It’s about letting grudges and other petty things go.
It’s about accepting people as they are and appreciating their uniqueness.
It’s about showing respect to all that’s around you.
It’s about going through your day with patience and gratitude and, above all else, it’s about spreading love and kindness.
It’s about what you can do to make the world a better place because you are in it.
So, as you go through your day today and random life situations come up, think about how you can make those moments in time better; and live for today…in both ways.
